How to reuse your coffee grounds at home

We'd like to talk about something most of us don’t think twice about: coffee waste.

That little puck left behind after your morning espresso? Most of it goes straight in the bin without a second thought. But here’s the thing; coffee waste doesn’t just disappear.

The Hard Facts: Coffee Waste & Methane

When coffee waste is sent to landfill, it decomposes anaerobically (which means without oxygen), which produces methane (CH₄).

  • Methane is a greenhouse gas ~28–34 times more potent than CO₂ over 100 years

  • Over 20 years, it’s ~84 times more potent

It might be small per cup, but multiplied across millions of coffees every day, the impact adds up quickly. A typical espresso puck weighs ~18–20g wet. This equates roughly to:~0.01–0.03 kg CO₂e per puck (order-of-magnitude estimate, not a fixed universal number)

And when you realise that happens globally with every single cup, every single day… it starts to feel like a missed opportunity.

Especially when coffee waste is actually incredibly useful.

So, this Earth Day, we’re keeping things simple. No guilt, no grand gestures; just a few easy ways to give your coffee grounds a second life at home.

Feed Your Garden

If you’ve got a garden (or even a few pots on a windowsill), coffee waste is a gift.

Used coffee grounds are rich in nitrogen, making them a great addition to compost or a light sprinkle directly into soil. They can help improve soil structure and support healthy plant growth.

How to use it:

  • Add to your compost bin

  • Sprinkle lightly around plants and mix into the soil

  • Use in small amounts - don't smother them, think sprinkle!

Gardeners have been doing this for years, and once you start, it’s hard to go back to throwing it away.

Turn It Into a Natural Body Scrub

Coffee waste makes an excellent exfoliator! Simple, effective, and completely natural.

No complicated ingredients, no plastic packaging, no waste. Just something you’d normally throw away doing something useful instead.

How to use it:

  • Mix coffee grounds with a little coconut oil or olive oil

  • Use in the shower as a gentle body scrub

  • Rinse and go (your skin will thank you)

Or if don't fancy DIY you can get our grounds in both soap and scrub from Natural Spa. We give them our organic grounds from summer events and they turn them into something beautiful!

Neutralise Odours at Home

Coffee waste is brilliant at absorbing smells.

Think of it as a natural deodoriser! Perfect for those small, everyday annoyances like fridge odours or lingering smells in shoes.

How to use it:

  • Place dried coffee grounds in a small bowl in the fridge

  • Pop some into a breathable bag for shoes or cupboards

Before you knock your coffee waste into the bin, just pause for a second.

There’s probably a better place for it.
